After a few summers of steady encouragement and enthusiasm from family and friends, local musicians Roy Vizer and Dougal McLean decided to offer Zing Tang hot-sauce to the public in 2015. "Creative partners and co-founders of Zing Tang, Roy Vizer and Dougal McLean introduced their rhubarb hot sauce at Niagara Grocery last summer. After a successful reception, Zing Tang is now available at the Root Cellar, Market on Yates and Millstream, Aubergine Specialty Foods, Carnivore Meats, and Natural Foods on Salt Spring Island. Vizer and McLean say people who don’t generally go for hot sauces enjoy Zing Tang. “It all comes down to the rhubarb,” says Vizer. “We’re not playing the ‘who’s hot enough’ game here,” says McLean. “Though the habanero heat adds a great little kick, it’s the slightly after-the-fact kick.” The idea for Zing Tang came about when Vizer’s mother-in-law handed him a surplus of rhubarb. “We didn’t want to make crumble and neither of us have a real sweet tooth,” says McLean. “I had this moment,” says Vizer, “of hey, I can make hot sauce with this!” “It’s an application beyond dessert,” McLean says. With over 25 years of restaurant experience combined (Vizer in the kitchen and McLean front of house) the two soon came up with a recipe, a logo, and a name."
